Etsy Jewelry Image Requirements: Specs, Crops and How to Meet Them

Etsy publishes exact numbers for listing photos, and jewelry is the category where getting them wrong shows fastest: a thin chain or a small stone turns to mush in a thumbnail that was uploaded too small or cropped badly. This guide lists Etsy's official specifications as they stand, explains how the search thumbnail crops your first image, and shows how a rendered image set is produced to hit every one of those numbers on the first upload.

These figures come from Etsy's Help Center article "Requirements and Best Practices for Images in Your Etsy Shop" and Etsy's Listing Image Requirements policy (effective 9 July 2024). Check the live page before a large upload — Etsy revises these from time to time.

Two of these matter far more than the rest for jewelry. The 2000 px recommendation is what lets a buyer zoom into a pavé setting without it pixelating, and the 1 MB ceiling is what forces you to compress carefully so a 2000 px file still uploads.

What the policy says about mockups and renders

Etsy's Listing Image Requirements policy is explicit that sellers must use their own photos of the actual finished product, and for customised items the first image must show a finished, customised item similar to what the buyer receives — not a blank product or a "Your Text Here" mockup. Computer-generated mockups are allowed in the additional images.

For a jewelry seller this sets a simple rule of thumb. If you sell a finished, in-stock piece, your first image should represent that finished piece. Photorealistic renders made from the piece's CAD file depict the finished design — metal colour, stone cut and proportions — rather than a placeholder, which is what the policy is written to exclude. Where they earn their keep without any ambiguity is in the second to tenth slots: metal-colour variants, alternate angles, scale references and lifestyle scenes that would each need a separate shoot to photograph. If your listing is made to order and no physical sample exists yet, read the policy wording yourself and decide how you present the first image; we render to the design, not to a guess.

How the thumbnail crop works, and why it kills jewelry photos

Etsy shows your first image in search as a landscape-leaning thumbnail. If you upload a tall portrait file, the top and bottom are cropped away; if you upload a square, the crop is gentler but still trims the edges. Necklaces and drop earrings suffer most because the interesting part sits at the bottom of a portrait frame.

The practical fix is to compose the first image with the piece centred and generous empty space on all sides, at 2000 px or more, so that any crop still shows the whole product. A rendered image makes this trivial: the camera can be reframed and re-rendered at any aspect ratio without a reshoot, and the same design can be exported once as a 4:3 first image and again as 1:1 or 4:5 for the remaining slots.

Common reasons a jewelry photo looks wrong on Etsy

• Uploaded below 2000 px. Etsy upscales small files for the zoom view, which is where a soft, blurry setting comes from.
• Compressed too hard to get under 1 MB. JPEG artefacts appear first in fine detail — prongs, milgrain, chain links. Export at 2000 px with quality around 80–85 rather than 2000 px at quality 60.
• Transparent PNG backgrounds. Etsy does not support them; the transparency renders as a flat colour and the edges look cut out.
• White that isn't white. A background photographed at 245-250 looks grey next to Etsy's page. Renders are produced on a true 255 white or a deliberate soft-shadow tone, so there is no colour cast to correct.
• Inconsistent lighting across a range. Five earrings photographed on five days rarely match. A rendered set uses one lighting rig for every SKU.

On-white versus lifestyle for Etsy

Etsy buyers respond to context, and Etsy's own seller guidance leans towards a clean, well-lit first image with lifestyle images following it. A workable pattern for jewelry is:

1. Slot 1: the piece on white or a soft neutral, centred, no props, sized for the thumbnail crop.
2. Slots 2–4: alternate angles and a close-up of the setting.
3. Slot 5: metal-colour variants side by side, if the listing has variations.
4. Slots 6–8: a lifestyle scene (a bracelet on a notebook, a pendant on a linen surface) or an on-body view for scale.
5. Slot 9–10: packaging or a size reference against a familiar object.

Every one of those images can come from the same design file. That is the difference in effort between a rendered set and a shoot: the second metal colour is a material change, not a second sample.

Checklist before you upload

• First image at least 2000 × 2000 px (never below 635 px)
• Every file under 1 MB
• JPEG or non-transparent PNG only
• Piece centred with margin on all sides for the thumbnail crop
• Same white point and lighting across the whole range
• Variation images match the variation names in the listing
• First image shows the finished item, not a blank or placeholder
