Sending a CAD file for rendering: what to send and what comes back
If you already have a CAD model of the piece, rendering starts from that file and skips the modelling step entirely. You send the file with a short note on metal, stones and the channel the images are for; the studio sets up materials, lighting and cameras and returns the image and video set from $20 per design. This page covers which file to send, what to check before you send it, and exactly what you receive.
Which file to send
Send the native CAD file where you can. A 3DM keeps the surfaces, layers and stone objects intact, which lets the renderer assign metal to metal and diamond to diamond without rebuilding anything. An STL is a mesh with no material or layer information; it renders, but every stone and metal region has to be separated by hand first, which is slower and is quoted as extra work on complex pieces. If your CAD program exports something else, say what it is when you send it and the studio will tell you whether it needs converting.
- 3DM - preferred. Surfaces, layers and stones arrive as separate objects.
- STL - accepted. A single mesh; stones and metal are separated in the studio before rendering.
- Other CAD exports - ask first. Send the format name with the file and the studio will confirm.
What to check before you send it
- Scale. Confirm the model is in millimetres and that a ring size or a stone diameter measures what it should. A model exported at ten times scale renders with the wrong depth of field and the wrong stone sparkle.
- Stone objects. Diamonds and coloured stones should be separate objects from the metal, and ideally on their own layer, so each can carry its own material.
- Closed surfaces. Open or flipped surfaces show up as black patches or see-through metal in the render. If the model was built for casting it is usually fine; a quick sketch model may not be.
- Metal and stone list. Write it in the note: 14kt yellow, 1.0 ct round centre, 0.01 ct melee, for example. The renderer cannot read that from the geometry.
- The channel. Etsy, Amazon, Shopify and Instagram each want a different crop, background and video length; naming the channel sets the camera before the first draft.
What comes back
The render set is built to the published combos, and the pricing page lists what each contains. Every image is delivered at 1920 x 1920 pixels as PNG and JPG, video as MP4, through a download link on the studio's own server, and unbranded so it goes straight into your listing or your client's presentation.

What moves the price
The combos are starting rates for a standard piece. Complexity moves the number: heavy pave, filigree, enamel and multi-stone cluster work take longer to set up; extra camera angles, lifestyle scenes and on-body shots are quoted on top. An STL that needs stones separated by hand is quoted as extra work rather than refused. Whole ranges are quoted per project, and the bulk catalogue page explains how a run is batched.
How to send it
JPG, PNG and PDF references upload directly on the upload page, up to 5 MB. CAD files and larger archives go by email; the address is on the contact page, and an NDA can be signed before the file moves. The first reply is usually questions - metal, stones, size, channel - and then the first draft, which you mark up before the full set is produced.

What file format do you need for jewellery rendering?

Can you render from an STL file?
Yes. An STL is a single mesh with no material information, so the stone and metal regions are separated in the studio first. On a complex piece that separation is quoted as extra work.
How much does rendering from my CAD file cost?

What resolution are the images?
1920 x 1920 pixels, delivered as PNG and JPG. Video is delivered as MP4. Everything comes through a download link on the studio's own server.
Do I need to tell you the metal and stones?
Yes. Geometry does not carry that information. Write the metal, stone type, sizes and carat weights in the note with the file, and name the marketplace or website the images are for.
Is my CAD file kept confidential?
NDAs are signed on request before any file is exchanged, delivery is unbranded, and client work is shown on this site without names, logos or collection titles - or not at all where a client asks.
